Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State marked his swearing-in on Monday with a significant act of clemency, granting freedom and reduced sentences to 43 prisoners. This decision, made following the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, saw the immediate release of eight convicts, the commutation of 15 death row sentences to prison terms, and reduced sentences for 20 individuals serving life terms.
The Governor’s action underscores his commitment to justice reform, as stated by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN. Ajulo emphasized that Aiyedatiwa’s approach reflects a belief in second chances and the rehabilitation of offenders.
This move aligns with broader judicial reforms initiated by the Governor, which included the appointment of six new judges to strengthen the state’s legal system. Reflecting on the personal significance of his inauguration, Aiyedatiwa noted that it had been the late Governor Akeredolu’s wish for him to succeed him.
With his second term now underway, Governor Aiyedatiwa has set a clear tone for his administration: one focused on justice, fairness, and providing second chances.
