The Ondo State Government has voiced concern over recent operations carried out by officers of the Force Intelligence Department (FID), warning that the manner in which the exercises were conducted has created fear and uncertainty among residents.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Idowu Ajanaku, the government acknowledged the important role of security agencies in investigating crimes and combating criminal activities. However, it stressed that such operations should follow established procedures and take public safety into account.
According to the government, the commando-style approach adopted during the operations has unsettled many residents and disturbed the peaceful environment that Ondo State is known for.
“While acknowledging the constitutional responsibility of security agencies to investigate and combat criminal activities, the government believes that operations of such nature should be conducted in accordance with established protocols and with due consideration for public safety and confidence.
“This manner of operation is creating unnecessary anxiety among law-abiding citizens and disrupted the peaceful atmosphere for which Ondo State is known,” the statement reads.
The Ondo State Government therefore appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to take appropriate steps to regulate the activities of specialised police units operating within the state and ensure that proper procedures are observed during security operations.
The government also called for stronger coordination between security agencies and state authorities whenever actionable intelligence is available. It noted that effective communication would help prevent unnecessary tension and reassure members of the public.
“The government states where ever actionable intelligence exists, official channels of communication and coordination with relevant state authorities should be activated to avoid creating avoidable tension among the populace,” the statement added.
While reaffirming its support for lawful efforts to tackle crime and protect lives, the Ondo State Government maintained that security operations must be conducted professionally and responsibly. It emphasised that such actions should build public trust rather than create fear.
The government further assured residents of its commitment to their safety and wellbeing, urging them to remain calm while it continues discussions with relevant security authorities to ensure future operations respect due process and preserve public peace.
