The FCT Police have confirmed that one person has died and three others have been injured following an explosion at the Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School in Kuchibuyi, Kubwa, on Monday, January 6, 2025. The explosion occurred at approximately 11:00 AM, when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated on the school’s veranda.

Upon receiving a distress call from the Sarki of Kuchibuyi, a team of police operatives, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, responded swiftly to the scene. The area was immediately cordoned off for safety and a thorough investigation was launched.

Preliminary findings indicate that the explosive device was brought to the school by three men, who were suspected to be from Katsina. According to police, the two men who were tampering with the IED at the time of the explosion were killed instantly. A third man, along with a female trader who was nearby, sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment under police supervision.

The FCT Bomb Squad has confirmed that the device was an IED, and remnants of the device have been recovered for further analysis. The school’s owner, Mallam Adamu Ashimu, has been taken into custody for questioning.

The Commissioner of Police for FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or items to the police. He also issued safety guidelines for the public, advising against touching or moving any suspicious objects and to immediately contact authorities in such situations.

In addition to the police’s official statement, Bwari Area Council Chairman John Gabaya confirmed the explosion, stating that one person died at the scene, and four others were injured, including a girl selling soyabean cakes near the school. Gabaya also confirmed that the person responsible for bringing the IED to the school had been apprehended for interrogation
