Grammy-winning Afrobeat star, Burna Boy, has declared that the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, remains the only musician greater than him, reigniting conversations around legacy, influence, and respect within the genre.

Burna Boy’s comment comes against the backdrop of a heated public exchange between singer Wizkid and Fela’s youngest son, Seun Kuti, which erupted after Wizkid’s fans compared the superstar to the late Afrobeat legend. The comparison did not sit well with Seun Kuti, who openly criticised Wizkid, accusing him of disrespecting his father’s legacy.

The exchange quickly escalated, triggering widespread reactions across social media. Nigerians, including celebrities and music enthusiasts, took sides in the debate, with some condemning Wizkid for what they described as an affront to Fela’s towering influence, while others faulted Seun Kuti for escalating the confrontation and provoking Wizkid’s response.

Amid the controversy, Burna Boy offered his perspective in a video shared on Instagram by popular social media commentator, Tunde Ednut, on Saturday evening. In the clip, the Afro-fusion star was unequivocal in his stance, saying, “Fela is the king. He is the only one greater than me.”

His statement has since drawn attention online, with many interpreting it as both a tribute to Fela’s enduring legacy and a firm assertion of Burna Boy’s own standing in the global Afrobeat movement.
