Following Rivers State Governor Nysome Wike’s pledge to reveal his preferred presidential candidate in January 2023, the All Progressives Congress (APC) South East Presidential spokesman, Dr. Josef Onoh, has urged Governors in his zone to support Bola Ahmed Tinubu as their unified presidential candidate in the January 25 presidential election.
According to Onoh, the driving choice should be based on the economic benefits that the Asiwaju presidency would bring to the Southeast.
According to Onoh, given the recent revival of coal mining by the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe, Southeast Nigeria, with its high coal production potential, is in a prime position to capitalize on Tinubu’s economic blueprint.
As a result, he asked the remaining three governors in the Southeast (Enugu, Anambra, and Abia states) to join their counterparts in Imo and Ebonyi states in supporting Asiwaju Tinubu for the position of Nigeria’s next president in order to fully exploit the zone’s economic potential.
Onoh stated that the days of political interests taking precedence over economic opportunities were over, noting that what mattered to the Nigerian people now was their economic affairs more than anything else, and pleaded with the Southeast governor to queue into the provision for which Tinubu has the best formula.
“I’m asking the Southeast governors to follow Britain’s lead by putting the economy ahead of politics, therefore they must back Asiwaju,” Onoh explained. Wisdom and experience do not come with age; they are the result of changing times. The events of 2015 and 2019 were disastrous for the southeast, and they must not be repeated.
“With the license for coal mining restoration, the Southeast will be the main beneficiaries of the next Nigerian administration for economic emancipation,” Asiwaju has always said. It’s all about the Southeast’s economy, which is why the Governors should set aside their egos, personal disagreements, and preferences to recognize that it’s all for the benefit and economics of this region.
“Soon they build they economy, they have solved insecurity because the cause of insecurity in the Southeast is the poor economy and the economy of the region is related to the politics of the centre and once there is a good economy all these agitations would stop.
“It will be harmful and a matter of political suicide for our South East leaders and the region’s economy if the Governors fail to support and deliver Asiwaju come 2023. If these Governors can merely grow the Southeast’s economy, they will have reached a watershed moment.”
