Behind every successful digital payment, money transfer, bill payment and merchant transaction in Nigeria lies a powerful technology system that most users never see. At the recent OPay Media Parley held on 16 July 2026, the company explained how years of investment in technology have helped build one of Nigeria’s most trusted digital payment platforms.

Speaking at the event, Elizabeth Wang, Chief Commercial Officer of OPay, said the company’s goal extends beyond creating another payment app. She explained that OPay aims to make financial services more inclusive through technology while building a trusted platform that creates lasting value. The company plans to serve one billion users, support ten million merchants and create one million jobs by making digital payment services safer, easier and more accessible.

According to Wang, “People may only see a successful transfer or payment notification, but behind that moment are years of investment in technology, infrastructure and innovation. Our goal is to make digital finance so dependable that customers can move money confidently without ever needing to think about the technology making it possible.”

Dotun Adekunle, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, said OPay focuses on solving customers’ everyday challenges. “We don’t begin with technology. We begin with the customer’s experience. Every failed transfer, delayed alert or security concern is treated as an engineering challenge. Where others accept these problems as normal, our teams work until the problem disappears from the customer’s experience,” he said.

The company revealed that its infrastructure delivers a 99.9 per cent transaction success rate and processes payments in less than one second through multiple backup systems and automatic failover technology.

To strengthen customer protection, OPay has introduced an in-house Security Centre featuring Emergency Lock, Safety PIN, Night Guard, Large Transaction Shield, and an AI-powered Anti-Scam Shield. The platform also uses intelligent risk-based security, including facial verification for unusual activities, while keeping everyday transactions quick and simple.

Beyond technology, OPay continues to invest in financial inclusion, youth development and education through its ₦1.2 billion 10-year OPayScholars Programme, which includes the National Innovation Challenge.
