Osun Governorship Election Faces Crucial Credibility Test Ahead of 2027

Osun governorship election has become a major test of Nigeria’s democratic credibility, with the spokesperson for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s Campaign Council urging authorities to deliver a free, fair and transparent poll ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday after an advocacy visit to the Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah Centre, Barrister Pelumi Olajengbesi called on local and international observers to closely monitor the August 15, 2026, governorship poll.

He argued that the Osun governorship election would measure the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Nigeria Police Force and other institutions responsible for protecting Nigeria’s electoral process.

Olajengbesi stressed that transparent conduct during the election would strengthen public confidence in democratic institutions and reinforce trust ahead of the 2027 general elections. He also urged election stakeholders to uphold the rule of law and ensure every eligible voter can cast a ballot without intimidation or interference.

The campaign spokesperson said credible elections remain essential to Nigeria’s democracy and called on all institutions involved to discharge their constitutional responsibilities impartially.

The Osun governorship election is scheduled for August 15, 2026, and political observers view it as one of the country’s most closely watched state polls before the next general election.
