Afrobeats star Ikuforiji Olaitan, widely known as Oxlade, has firmly stated that he neither smokes nor takes hard drugs, attributing his discipline to his strong Christian upbringing and musical foundation.
The ‘Ku Lo Sa’ hitmaker made the disclosure during a candid conversation with gospel singer Tim Godfrey, where he reflected on how family values and early exposure to church music shaped his lifestyle and career choices.
Oxlade explained that he was raised in a deeply religious and musically inclined household, a background that steered him away from vices commonly associated with the entertainment industry. According to him, his journey into music began in the church, where he served extensively across various choir units.
He revealed that he coordinated choirs for children, teenagers, youths, and the general congregation, describing the experience as formative to his character and artistic direction. Oxlade added that music runs strongly in his family, noting that his grandmother is a deaconess and gifted singer, his grandfather was a multi-instrumentalist, and his mother excelled in singing and dancing. He also disclosed that a pastor is part of his extended family.
Emphasising his creative roots, the singer stated that his gospel songwriting remains his strongest musical expression, describing gospel music as the highest form of music.
Addressing public perceptions about his career and success, Oxlade maintained that his achievements are divinely orchestrated. He argued that touring over 40 cities with a debut album is only possible through divine backing, stressing that his confidence is anchored in faith rather than public opinion.
The singer concluded that as long as God continues to direct his path, he has little reason for concern about how he is perceived.
