FIFA, the global governing body of football, has rejected Argentina’s protest regarding the disallowance of a last-minute equalizer in their opening match against Morocco at the Paris Olympics, according to Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, President of the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has dismissed our protest concerning the incidents during the match against Morocco,” Tapia announced on X. He added that he is seeking further clarification on the decision.
Argentina lost the match, which was the opening game of the men’s football tournament at the Paris Olympics, with a final score of 2-1 to Morocco. The game was briefly interrupted when fans stormed the pitch, and after a two-hour delay, the video assistant referee (VAR) ruled out Argentina’s last-minute goal.
On Thursday, Paris Olympics organizers stated they are investigating the circumstances that led to the pitch invasion.
“In defense of our rights, AFA will seek an explanation for the decision and consider possible appeals,” Tapia said.
Football is a major passion in Argentina, which boasts three World Cup victories, the most recent of which was against France in 2022. Additionally, Argentina clinched the Copa America title earlier this month with a win over Colombia in a dramatic final in Miami, marking their record 16th Copa America triumph.
