Veteran Nollywood actress, Patience Ozokwo, has opened up about her early marriage, family life and firm views on commitment, revealing that she was married off at the age of 19 through an arrangement made by her parents.

The respected actress disclosed the personal details in a post shared by a verified X account, Igbo History and Fact, where she recounted how marriage came to her at a young age without personal choice.

According to Ozokwo, the arrangement initially left her frightened and uncertain, as she struggled to connect emotionally with a man she did not choose for herself. However, she said love gradually developed, leading to a marriage that lasted 23 years.

She revealed that her husband battled illness for 15 years before his death in 2000, a period she described as demanding but defining in their journey together.

Ozokwo said the marriage produced three biological children, while she later adopted five more. One of the adopted children, she noted, has since passed away, leaving her with seven children in total.

Following her husband’s death, the actress said she chose not to remarry, dedicating her life instead to raising her children and providing them with strong moral guidance.

Reflecting on modern marriages, Ozokwo observed that despite increased self-awareness and personal development efforts, many marriages today still struggle. She contrasted this with her era, when marriages—especially those arranged by parents—were approached with a deep sense of endurance and responsibility.

The veteran actress emphasized that values such as respect, responsibility and sacrifice formed the foundation of her household, helping her maintain stability despite years of hardship.

She added that she consistently advised her children against divorce, stressing that her daughters were raised to be respectful and her sons to be responsible, principles she believes were critical to building a strong and lasting home.
