The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has ramped up pressure on President Bola Tinubu, urging him to seek both local and international assistance to curb Nigeria’s worsening insecurity—or resign honourably.

In a strongly worded statement on Sunday, the party’s Fractional National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, condemned what it described as the federal government’s “simplistic and reactionary” handling of nationwide security threats, particularly the rising wave of kidnappings across northern states.

The PDP criticised the closure of schools as a response to escalating abductions, warning that such a move amounts to “a surrender to terrorists” whose objective is to shut down education. The party said the trend of school shutdowns—already adopted by some northern states and reportedly under consideration by the federal government—would only advance the agenda of extremist groups seeking to bar children from formal learning.

According to the party, Nigerians under the APC-led administration have endured a disturbing surge in kidnappings, each incident leaving “sorrow, tears, blood, fear and deep anguish” in affected communities. It faulted the Tinubu government for what it called lacklustre and unempathetic responses whenever attacks occur.

The PDP challenged the federal government to immediately fund and implement the National Policy on Safety, Security and Violence-Free Schools, which relies on community intelligence and rapid security deployment to prevent attacks on learning centres.

Reiterating that protecting lives and property remains the government’s foremost responsibility, the party insisted that any administration incapable of performing this duty must “seek help or resign, if it is sincere and responsible.”
