The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has dismissed speculations about the possible defection of Governor Siminalayi Fubara to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting it remains unbothered by the reports.
State PDP Chairman, Robinson Ewor, told journalists that the governor reserves the right to pursue any political path he considers beneficial to the people who elected him. He stressed that Fubara’s choices, though personal, must ultimately align with the broader interest of Rivers residents.
The speculation stems from an alleged peace deal linked to the six-month emergency rule declared in Rivers on March 18 and lifted on September 18. Part of the deal reportedly required Governor Fubara to defect to the APC.
Ewor, however, maintained he was unaware of any such arrangement and noted that the governor had not communicated any plan to leave the PDP.
Fueling the rumours, Fubara was spotted on Monday with Imo State Governor and APC Governors’ Forum Chairman, Hope Uzodimma, during a visit to President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
Observers also noted that in his statewide broadcast resuming duty on September 18, Fubara avoided crediting the PDP for its legal and political push against the emergency rule. Eleven PDP governors had challenged the declaration in court, while civil society groups and prominent Nigerians condemned the move as unconstitutional.
Despite the mounting signs, the PDP leadership in Rivers insists it is not rattled and will continue to focus on the party’s stability and the interests of its members.
