Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has encouraged Nigerian nurses who seek better opportunities abroad to follow their ambitions. Speaking to students at the College of Nursing Sciences in Adazi-Nnukwu over the weekend, the former Governor of Anambra State emphasized that there should be no restrictions on nurses pursuing opportunities outside Nigeria if they find it challenging to thrive domestically.
Obi remarked, “I have always told the Nursing Council not to prevent you from traveling abroad after graduation. If things aren’t working for you here, go where it will. We won’t advise anyone to stay in a difficult situation.”
He further expressed optimism that those who choose to go abroad would eventually return to contribute to building a stronger Nigeria. Sharing a personal anecdote, Obi mentioned, “My PA, Michael-Jude, who was with me during my last visit here, has gone abroad. He married a nurse, and the UK government granted them both rights to study. He’s now in the UK. As for me, I am currently looking for a new PA.”
