Peter Obi has challenged President Bola Tinubu over a reported legal move to prevent a foreign court from releasing records concerning his past.
Obi said Nigerians deserve clear answers on issues involving the president, particularly where the matters concern public interest.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, made the comments in a statement published on his official social media page on Monday, 31 August 2026.
He questioned why a sitting president would seek to withhold records that could face legitimate scrutiny in a foreign court.
According to Peter Obi, public office comes with a responsibility to answer questions about a leader’s background.
He argued that Nigerians should not be denied information simply because the records relate to a political office holder.
“It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past,” Obi said.
He added that the records reportedly relate to issues that have generated public interest, including questions surrounding the president’s educational history.
Meanwhile, Obi said President Tinubu should confront such questions openly instead of trying to restrict access to potentially relevant documents.
