-Labour Party’s Peter Obi Vows to Honour One-Term Deal If Coalition Demands It
Says He’s Committed to National Unity, Not Desperate for Power

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has pledged to honour any coalition agreement that demands he serves a single term in office, with a promise to hand over power to the North by 2031.

Obi made the declaration during a live Space session on X (formerly Twitter), tagged #PeterObiOnParallelFacts, which drew over 10,000 live listeners and generated close to 3,000 comments from participants.

“If the agreement is one term, I will leave on May 28, 2031 — not even May 29,” Obi affirmed.

The former Anambra State Governor stressed that he is not driven by desperation for power, but rather by a deep desire to see Nigeria function effectively.

“I am not desperate to be president. I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” he told a listener identified as Balactic.

Obi also emphasized the need for political maturity, especially when it comes to honouring zoning arrangements and respecting coalition agreements that foster inclusiveness and national cohesion.

He explained that such political compromises are critical for uniting Nigeria across ethnic and regional lines, and that he would gladly support them in the interest of national progress.

Obi’s comment comes amid intensifying discussions about coalition politics ahead of the 2027 elections, as various opposition blocs explore strategic alliances to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
