Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that any attempt to rig the 2027 general election will be confronted through lawful and legitimate means.
Obi made the declaration on Wednesday in Enugu, while formally announcing his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the party backing a new opposition coalition.
He warned that Nigeria’s democracy is under threat, accusing some political actors who once benefitted from the system of now undermining it through intimidation and what he described as gangsterism.
Obi also called for the early verification of candidates’ academic records, arguing that such a step would prevent avoidable pre-election litigations and disputes that often destabilise the electoral process.
According to him, the open celebration of electoral malpractice has become alarming, stressing that Nigerians must not allow such practices to thrive ahead of 2027.
Obi said those plotting to manipulate future elections should be prepared for firm resistance, adding that the opposition would mobilise within the bounds of the law to defend the integrity of the vote.
