The tragic petrol tanker explosion at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna highway in Niger State has claimed the lives of at least 73 individuals, with 53 others injured. Hussaini Isah, head of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Minna, confirmed the updated death toll on Saturday evening, noting that rescue operations were ongoing.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. when a petrol-laden tanker detached from its truck while transferring fuel. Eyewitness Abdulmalik Jibo described the scene, although he was not present when the tankers ignited. Initial reports indicated over 30 fatalities, but the figure quickly rose as the fire raged and rescue teams worked through the day. By evening, more than 50 bodies were counted, many of which were burned beyond recognition.
NEMA officials reported that the fire was extinguished by Saturday evening, and efforts continued to recover the victims. Some of the bodies were identified by family members, with sources indicating that many of the victims were from a local community near the explosion site.
Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State expressed deep concern over the recurrence of such deadly explosions and extended his condolences to the victims’ families. He urged citizens to prioritize their safety and take precautions to avoid dangerous situations. The governor described the explosion as “heartbreaking” and “unfortunate,” while also emphasizing the need for better public awareness of such risks.
