The only Nigerian football team still in contention for the continental championship is Rivers United. On Wednesday night, the Stanley Eguma-led team defeated Al Nasr SC of Libya 6-1 on aggregate to go to the CAF Confederation Cup group round.
After taking a 5-0 lead entering the second leg against Al Nasr SC, the Port Harcourt-based team drew 1-1.
After a scoreless first half, Abdulsalam Al Fitouri of Al Nasr scored in the 39th minute, beating Rivers United goalkeeper Seidu Mutawakilu, but Rivers United responded with a goal from Nyima Nwagua in the 57th.
Before Rivers United took the field, their countrymen Plateau United were defeated humiliatingly by Al Akhdar, a rival Libyan team.
With a 4-1 first-leg advantage and a scoreless first half, the Peace Boys managed to fall 3-0 and lose the draw 4-4, forcing them to lose via the away goals rule.
Before the hosts’ goal from Anas Al Werfalli two minutes before the hour mark, both teams had played to a scoreless draw in the first half of the game.
After that, Plateau United gave up two quick goals in the 85th and 93rd minutes, respectively.
