In the early hours of Tuesday, a fire ripped through a school for the blind in central Uganda, killing eleven people, according to police.
The Uganda Police Force posted on Twitter, “The origin of the fire is currently unknown but so far 11 deaths as a result of the fire have been confirmed while six are in critical states and admitted (to hospital).”
The tragedy happened at the Salama School for the Blind in Mukono, southeast of the capital Kampala, at around 1:00 a.m. (2200 GMT Monday).
Police did not specify whether the victims were all kids at the school when they stated that an inquiry into the fire’s cause had begun.
Salama, which was established in April 1999, serves young people between the ages of six and 25.
In the nation of East Africa, several school fires have recently started.
At a boarding school in southern Uganda in November 2018, a suspected arson attack resulted in the deaths of 11 boys and severe burns to another 20.
