Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has strongly condemned the alarming rise in cases of jungle justice across Nigeria. On Sunday, he directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police for the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to launch a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible face the full force of the law.

In a statement, police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi expressed concern over a recent incident in Edo State where a mob stormed a police station and set several suspects ablaze on October 13. The police decried this trend, warning that such actions undermine the rule of law and harm Nigeria’s global reputation.

Adejobi explained that the mob attacked the police station in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area, out of frustration, believing the police were protecting suspected kidnappers and armed robbers. Though the main suspect and three others were in custody, the crowd wrongly assumed the police would release them and resorted to violence, killing the suspects and torching the station and its property.

Another case of jungle justice occurred in Agege, Lagos, on October 19, when a mob attacked a driver for accidentally hitting a motorcyclist. The situation escalated when a police team attempted to rescue the driver, resulting in the tragic death of ASP Augustine Osupayi, a police officer on the scene.

Condoling the families of the victims, IGP Egbetokun has ordered the FCID to identify and prosecute those involved in these brutal acts. He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to upholding justice while urging the public to respect due process and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
