The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced the arrest of 50 suspects linked to the vandalism and theft of manhole covers across the territory. The arrests were made following a targeted operation that led to the recovery of several stolen items, including 25 manhole covers, three vehicles, and various tools used in the destruction of public infrastructure.
In a press briefing today, Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu outlined the success of the operation, which was carried out in key areas such as Kabusa Garki, Mabushi, and Wuse. Disu noted that the arrested individuals are part of a larger network involved in the illegal sale of stolen manhole covers, posing a serious threat to public safety by creating hazardous conditions on roads and walkways.
The items recovered during the operation include:
25 galvanized manhole covers
5 solar street lights
Several rebar rods and streetlight poles
7 barrels of diesel suspected to have been stolen from network masts
4 plasma TV sets
2 car batteries, and other valuable items such as high-voltage cables, locally made pistols, and numerous household goods.
The Commissioner emphasized the police’s commitment to enforcing a zero-tolerance policy against vandalism and theft, stressing the importance of protecting public infrastructure. This announcement follows an earlier statement by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, confirming the arrests based on a viral video showing individuals involved in the theft of manhole covers. Olayinka highlighted that efforts are underway to apprehend those involved in buying the stolen items.
Minister Nyesom Wike condemned the theft, noting the dangers posed to road users, and vowed that the government would take all necessary actions to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The FCT Police Command reassured the public that it will continue to work closely with other security agencies to safeguard public infrastructure and ensure the safety of residents.
