Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun described the fainting incident by some minors at the Abuja Federal High Court as “scripted.” The minors were among 76 suspects facing trial for alleged involvement in the August #EndBadGovernance protest. The charges include mutiny, treason, and property destruction.

Before the suspects could enter pleas, at least four collapsed, prompting media attention. The court later granted them N10 million bail each, noting that they appeared unwell.

The police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, quoted Egbetokun emphasizing, “Our focus remains on justice and compassion, while respecting the rights of each suspect.” Medical assistance was immediately provided, reinforcing the police’s commitment to detainee welfare.

Egbetokun reiterated that while Nigeria’s law requires young people to be accountable for severe offenses, each case is handled with empathy and in line with human rights standards.
