The Nigeria Police Council has formally confirmed Tunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), solidifying his leadership of the country’s police force.

The confirmation came on Monday during a high-level meeting at the State House in Abuja. The session drew governors from Kwara, Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Enugu and Plateau states, alongside the ministers of Police Affairs, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Interior.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to transmit Disu’s name to the Senate for legislative confirmation in line with constitutional requirements.

Disu’s elevation follows his appointment as acting IGP on February 24 after the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun. The presidency disclosed that Egbetokun stepped down due to “pressing family considerations.”

Egbetokun had earlier been appointed IGP on June 19, 2023, replacing Usman Baba, and was subsequently confirmed by the Police Council in October 2023.

Before his latest appointment, Disu had resumed duties as Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos State. His confirmation now places him at the helm of the Nigeria Police Force at a time of heightened security concerns across the country.

A seasoned officer, Disu joined the force in 1992 and has built a career spanning strategic command, intelligence operations and state-level policing. He previously served as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, headed the Intelligence Response Team, and held office as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory. He also served as AIG in charge of the Special Protection Unit.

Academically, Disu holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University, alongside master’s degrees in Public Administration, Criminology, and Security and Legal Psychology—credentials that underscore his blend of operational experience and policy insight.

With his confirmation by the Police Council and pending Senate approval, Disu now steps into the role as the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, tasked with steering reforms, strengthening internal security, and restoring public confidence in policing.
