The All Progressives Party, APC candidate for the Ife-South Constituency, Najeem Oyewumi, has not been designated as wanted, according to the Osun State Command of the Nigerian Police.
In the state’s social media, a police memo claiming that Oyewumi was wanted for an alleged murder had gone viral. It claimed that one of his thugs had killed one person.
But, the police command on Friday denied ever publishing such a wanted notice in a statement made by its spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola.
“The attention of Osun State Police Command has been attracted to the viral press release which is being distributed on social media stating that one Najeem Oyewumi has been declared wanted in connection with the murder case of one Mr. Wole from Ife South Local Government Area,” the press release states.
“The Police Command wishes to say unequivocally that the press release was not at all issued by the Police. The Police Command is therefore advising the general public to ignore the news release in its entirety.
But, in order to identify and convict the irate element who made the release and act as a deterrent to others, the Commissioner of Police has directed a covert and intelligence-led inquiry.
Also, it is important to caution dishonest people away from criminal activity because, if caught, they would undoubtedly face harsh punishment under the law.
