Mr. Joseph David, a 28-year-old cab driver who was abducted along Esuk Mba road in the state’s Akpabuyo Local Government Area, has been freed by the Cross River State Police Command.
Following a distress call, the Anti-Cultism and Kidnapping Squad, a tactical unit of the command, worked with Operation Akpakwu (an Army detachment) to rescue the victim in the Esuk Mba woodland.
When they realized a search and rescue team was in route to them, the kidnappers allegedly abandoned their victim.
Additionally, it was learned that the victim’s car had been found.
The driver who was saved claimed that, unaware that it was a setup, he had been contracted to transport a passenger to Esuk Mba to bring palm oil to a mill.
He requested me to stop on the way to carry the oil, and when I enquired about the palm oil we were there to transport, two young guys with long rifles suddenly emerged from a nearby bush, marched me into a speedboat, and then carried me into the creeks.
“They took my car and drove off, leaving the individual who hired me on Nelson Mandela Street in Calabar. Fortunately, my car didn’t start, and some neighborhood kids realized something wasn’t right. A call was made to the anti-kidnapping squad’s tactical unit when the man was approached and fled.
