The Nigeria Police Force declared that after an arrest and while in custody, its officers will no longer torture suspects.
ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, made this declaration on Tuesday in an interview with Channels Television.
His remarks come after news broke that multiple people were taken into custody for the alleged murder of a Divisional Police Officer in the state of Rivers.
According to a representative for the Force, the officers are now aware of the Anti-torture Act 2017’s provisions and are conducting interviews in a professional manner.
He emphasized that the police do not use torture to get vital information from suspects, adding that although it might take some time, they will finally get the information they need.
Adejobi said, “We don’t torture in the police again. That era has gone. We are actually carrying out what we call interview and interrogation sessions in a professional way to get them.
“We are conscious of the provisions Anti-torture Act of 2017. We don’t need to torture anybody. It may take us time to get information from them but we will surely get information from them.”
The Nigeria Police Force has, however, strongly advised against the use of jungle justice in the nation.
The force issued this warning in a statement that was made public on Monday by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the agency’s public relations officer.
