Babatunji Wusu –
On Friday, the Kano State Police Command instructed its officers to begin a house-to-house search aimed at recovering items stolen during the recent #EndbadgovernanceinNigeria protest in Kano.
What began as a peaceful demonstration was disrupted by suspected criminals who engaged in widespread looting. These individuals targeted stores, homes, and government buildings, including the yet-to-be-opened office of the Nigerian Communication Commission. They stole furniture, electronics, and other valuables, and also vandalized streetlights and public decorations.
In response to the chaos, the police have arrested over 400 suspects and managed to recover some of the stolen items. According to social media user Sa’adatu Baba Ahmad, officers were actively searching homes in the Yakasai and Durumin Zungura areas of Kano Municipal on Friday to retrieve the looted goods. Ahmad reported, “Since 10:30 am, officers have been recovering stolen items from homes of those who took advantage of the protest. They’re still going through houses as we speak.”
During a briefing earlier in the day, the Kano Police Command reaffirmed its dedication to holding accountable those responsible for the violence and theft that occurred during the protest.
