Prof. Ayo Olukotun, a well-known political scientist, media expert, and columnist, passed away on Wednesday, at the age of 69.
He was also the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University’s Political Science Department in Ago Iwoye, Ogun State.
On Wednesday, Bukola Adeyemi Oyeniyi’s Facebook page confirmed his death.
Olukotun was a “mentor,” a “enviable professor,” and a “excellent columnist” whose work has influenced public policy and conversation over the last three decades.
He taught at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, the University of Lagos, and Lagos State University, as well as being a visiting professor of International Relations at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife.
He was also a famous professor and chairman of the Department of Political Science at Lead City University, as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
As a writer, he was the Chair of the Daily Times Editorial Board, and his weekly penetrating columns appeared in the Daily Times, Guardian, Compass and Punch, and several other frontline publications.
Olukotun invoked deep concepts to question the country’s challenges of weak administration, while profusely offering alternate paths to national redemption.
