Chelsea and Arsenal played out a tense 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, leaving both London clubs level on points but still nine points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

The match was evenly contested, with both teams enjoying almost identical possession and three shots on target each. However, it was Arsenal who left the pitch feeling more disappointed, as substitute Leandro Trossard missed two late opportunities to snatch a win for the visitors. Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, was visibly frustrated, holding his head in disbelief as his side let the game slip away.

Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal the lead in the 60th minute, converting a well-weighted ball from captain Martin Ødegaard, whose return from injury proved pivotal after the Gunners had struggled to score in their previous two matches. Chelsea responded quickly, equalizing 10 minutes later through substitute Enzo Fernández, whose pass to Pedro Neto outside the Arsenal box allowed the Portuguese winger to score with a low shot past goalkeeper David Raya.

“We came to win, so we’re not as happy as we wanted to be, but we didn’t want to lose, and it’s a good point against a good team,” Neto said after the match.

The game had an explosive start, with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer nearly putting his side ahead in the third minute, but Raya managed to tip his powerful shot over the bar. Arsenal thought they had taken the lead in the 32nd minute when former Chelsea striker Kai Havertz finished from a quick free kick, but VAR ruled him offside by a narrow margin. Five minutes earlier, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez had been forced into a save to deny Martinelli’s shot.

In the second half, Chelsea missed a couple of chances to take the lead, with Levi Colwill shooting just over and Noni Madueke firing high and wide. As the match drew to a close, Arsenal pushed forward in search of a winner. Sánchez saved a shot from substitute Mikel Merino, and Trossard missed an open goal when he fired over from close range. In the dying moments of injury time, William Saliba sent a cross across the six-yard box, but Trossard was unable to connect despite the goal being at his mercy.

The result lifted Chelsea to third in the Premier League, while Arsenal, who are now without a win in their last four league games, moved into fourth. Both teams are tied on 19 points, still trailing Liverpool by nine points.
