Manchester City lost further ground on Premier League leader Arsenal on Saturday after being held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United.

After Arsenal secured a late 2-0 win over Everton earlier in the day, Bernardo Silva gave City the lead in the 31st minute with a chipped effort that looped over goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

West Ham responded quickly, however, as Konstantinos Mavropanos headed home Jarrod Bowen’s corner just four minutes later to bring the hosts level.

City manager Pep Guardiola had earlier warned that the title race could be effectively over if his team dropped more points, and his players pushed forward desperately in search of a winner after halftime.

Erling Haaland, who has scored four goals in his previous 17 games, forced a fingertip save from Hermansen before later scuffing a shot wide from Antoine Semenyo’s cutback.

West Ham held firm late on, and Marc Guehi missed a final chance for City in the fifth minute of stoppage time when he sliced his effort wide.

The result left City second in the standings with 61 points from 30 matches, dealing another blow to its title hopes after its 3-0 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid earlier in the week.

West Ham climbed out of the relegation zone for the first time since December, moving up to 17th place with 29 points, one ahead of Nottingham Forest, which has a game in hand.
