Newcastle United condemned Chelsea to its second defeat in four days with a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday, thanks to a first-half goal from Anthony Gordon.
Still reeling from a 5-2 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, Liam Rosenior’s side again showed defensive weaknesses when Joe Willock beat the offside trap and squared the ball for Gordon to finish in the 18th minute.
Chelsea struggled to respond in the first half and was booed off by its fans at halftime.
The host increased its intensity after the break, but Newcastle’s organised defence kept most of Chelsea’s attacking attempts under control.
Chelsea came closest to equalising in the 93rd minute when captain Reece James struck the post with a free kick.
The defeat leaves Chelsea in fifth place, with its rivals for Champions League qualification — Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool — set to play on Sunday.
Newcastle, which had not won at Stamford Bridge since 2012, climbed three places to ninth in the standings.
Chelsea must now attempt to lift morale ahead of the second leg of its Champions League last-16 clash against PSG on Tuesday, where it faces the difficult task of overturning a three-goal deficit.
