The Presidency has dismissed reports claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to travel to the United States on Tuesday for a meeting with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, made this known in a statement released on Monday via his official X handle, describing the report as false and misleading.
Ajayi clarified that if President Tinubu were to visit the White House, his meeting would be with U.S. President Donald Trump, not the Vice President.
“There’s a Sahara Reporters story that President Tinubu is going to the U.S. on Tuesday to see U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. That story is not true. I can see that the fake news by Sahara has become the basis for some uninformed commentaries since yesterday. If President Tinubu is going to the White House, he won’t be going to see a Vice President,” Ajayi stated.
He urged Nigerians to disregard the report, noting that official information regarding any international engagement of the President would be released through authorized government channels.
Recall that earlier, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, had said that Presidents Tinubu and Trump share a common interest in the global fight against insurgency and terrorism, hinting that both leaders could meet soon either in Abuja or Washington, D.C.
Bwala, in a post on X, stated that both leaders “have a shared interest in the fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism against humanity.”
He further explained that President Trump had previously supported Nigeria by approving the sale of arms during his first term, while President Tinubu had utilized such support to strengthen the country’s counter-terrorism operations.
“As for the differences on whether terrorists in Nigeria target only Christians or all faiths, those differences, if they exist, would be discussed and resolved by the two leaders when they meet in the coming days, either in State House or the White House,” Bwala wrote.
The Presidency has, however, maintained that no official visit has been scheduled and warned against the spread of misinformation capable of misleading the public.
