During an interview aired on Monday night, former President Muhammadu Buhari emphasized that the restoration of peace in Nigeria’s North East region was among the notable achievements during his administration. He expressed satisfaction with the defeat of Boko Haram and the subsequent improvement in security in the area.
Buhari further highlighted Nigeria’s fortunate position of regaining control over significant portions of land in the North East, which were previously dominated by the dreaded Boko Haram group. He acknowledged the immense difficulty faced by the governor of Borno State, where numerous local governments were under the control of Boko Haram, allowing them to act with impunity.
The former president emphasized the fundamental importance of establishing security as the foundation for development and gaining the trust of the citizens. He acknowledged that, despite running for the presidency three times before his eventual victory in 2015, he was unable to accomplish all his intended goals during his tenure.
Buhari recognized the prevailing insecurity in Borno State and the wider northeast region when he assumed office, but noted that significant progress had been made in degrading the influence and activities of Boko Haram by the time he left government.
