Governors have been charged by President Muhammadu Buhari with stealing the allocations of LGAs in their states.
On December 1, during a speech at a State House event in Abuja, Buhari claimed that the governors unfairly treat the local government level. The president mentioned “fraudulent conduct” committed by some governors while allocating cash meant for local council management.
He claimed it is incomprehensible that certain state governors would collect money on behalf of council areas and send the council chairpersons only half of that sum.
“If the funds from the federal government to state governments are N100 million, let’s suppose it at N100 million — N50 million would be handed to the chairman with a document that he will sign indicating that he received N100 million,” he said.
The governor will keep the remaining funds for himself and distribute them as he sees fit. The local government chairman will then specify how much must be spent on salaries.
