MUSA ALIYU, NEWLY APPIONTED CHAIRMAN OF ICPC

Musa Aliyu, an attorney and the attorney general of Jigawa State, has been named by President Bola Tinubu as the next chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC).

Additionally, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the presidential spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, he named Clifford Oparaodu as the secretary to the panel.

Confirmation of the appointees by the Senate is required.

The announcement states that the appointment follows the request made by Bolaji Owasanoye, the departing chairman of the commission, who has a remaining statutory tenure of more than three months, “to proceed on pre-end of tenure leave beginning on 4 November 2023.”

The mandate of Mr. Owasanoye is legally set to end on February 3, 2024.

It was revealed that Mr. Tinubu was thinking of making Abdu Aboki, a retired justice of the Supreme Court, the new chair of the ICPC. However, it was discovered that Mr. Aboki, a native of Kano in northwest Nigeria, was dropped at the last minute. Concerns about putting 71-year-old Mr. Aboki in charge of the vital anti-corruption body during a time when public office corruption is rapidly evolving were expressed by many, and he will have to deal with them.

As the Attorney General of Jigawa State since September 2019, Mr. Aliyu “has embarked upon many far-reaching reforms,” according to the presidency. He also possesses degrees in law from the Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate levels.

The statement also stated that in October 2023, “he was named as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria-designate.”

According to the statement, Mr. Oparaodu, the secretary, has over thirty years of experience as a lawyer.

“As a Member of the Rivers State Judicial Service Commission and Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council, Mr. Oparaodu has served meritoriously in the public service,” the presidency claims.
