On Wednesday, there was unrest in Abuja as more than 300 angry youths gathered to demonstrate against the Supreme Court’s exparte decision temporarily blocking the Federal Government’s plan to outlaw the use of old Naira notes beginning on February 10, 2023.

The demonstrators, who gathered at the Central Bank of Nigeria’s offices and the Federal Attorney General’s office, gave the CBN a vote of confidence and urged them not to back down.

Armed with placards that read, “Justice Ariwoola, resist plot to use our Supreme Court undermine democracy,” the protesters charged Olukayode Ariwoola, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, with serving the interests of the All Progressives Congress, its presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, and the G5 Governors.

They pleaded with President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired) to issue an executive order prohibiting the use of the outdated notes.

Obed Agu, the coordinator of the Civil Society Central Body and the demonstrators’ leader, urged Nigerians to refuse the old Naira notes for their own benefit.

The unscrupulous politicians who are asking for an extension want to purchase votes, he claimed, therefore he urged Buhari to issue an executive order ending the policy deadline.

“We urge President Muhammadu Buhari to issue an executive order to end the policy’s February 10 deadline and halt additional extensions,” Agu stated. To help crooked politicians buy votes, the Supreme Court wants to intervene.

“The exparte application to the Supreme Court lacks a legal foundation. We reject it because it is an attempt to expose bank vaults so that people who want to purchase votes and people with access to illicit wealth can do so. In the interest of the next election in Nigeria, we request that the CJN swiftly revoke the exparte ruling.

“The Supreme Court’s efforts to undermine any attempt at a legitimate election have cost us dearly. The card reader that supported and grew the rigging of official election results was declared invalid by the Supreme Court.

“The Supreme Court appointed a guy who finished fourth in an election as governor of a state, which contributed to the demise of Imo state and the integrity of the electoral process. We won’t enable President Muhammadu Buhari to keep his promise of a smooth transition, and we won’t let the Chief Justice of Nigeria abuse his position.
