The singer-rapper Aaron Carter, who started out as a kid performer and had success records starting in his teen years, was discovered dead on Saturday at his Southern California home. He was 34.
The singer’s death was verified by family representatives. His fiancĂ©e Melanie Martin requested solitude as the family mourns.
Martin stated in a statement on Saturday that “we are still in the process of absorbing this tragic truth.” We sincerely appreciate your prayers and thoughts.
Carter, the younger sibling of Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter, opened shows for Britney Spears and his brother’s boy band while also releasing a number of songs, including “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It)” and “I Want Candy.”
According to Deputy Alejandra Parra with the LA County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were sent to the home in Lancaster, a desert community about 70 miles (112 kilometers) north of downtown Los Angeles, after allegations of a medical emergency.
Parra claimed that when the deputies arrived at the house they discovered a body, though she was unable to quickly establish that it was Carter. Authorities later claimed that a man was discovered in the home’s bathtub by a house sitter, and that resuscitation attempts failed.
Carter’s gold-selling debut self-titled album was released in 1997, the same year he served as the Backstreet Boys’ opening act on tour. With the release of his sophomore album, “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It),” in 2000, which featured the smash singles “I Want Candy” and the album’s title, he attained triple-platinum status. Disney and Nickelodeon frequently played his videos.
In addition to “Lizzie McGuire,” the singer appeared on several television programs, earning him acting credits. In 2006, he appeared in “House of Carters,” an unscripted television series on E!, alongside his brother Nick and his siblings B.J., Leslie, and Angel Carter.
In the musical “Seussical,” Carter made his Broadway debut in 2001 as JoJo. He participated in “Dancing with the Stars” on ABC in 2009, where he and partner Karina Smirnoff came in fifth. In 2012, he was a guest on the Food Network cooking competition “Rachel vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off.”
In a 2017 “The Doctors” episode, Carter talked openly about his drug use. The year after being detained on accusations of driving under the influence and marijuana-related crimes, he was in rehab. In an effort to regain custody of his son Prince, he occasionally checked himself into a facility for treatment.
“LOVE,” Carter’s fifth and last studio album, was made available in 2018.
