Real Madrid has announced that it will boycott the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris on Monday, citing a perceived snub of their striker Vinicius Junior, who is considered a frontrunner for the men’s award.
In a statement to AFP, the club expressed its belief that “Ballon d’Or-UEFA does not respect Real Madrid. And Real Madrid does not go where it is not respected.”
Vinicius played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s success last season, contributing to their victories in the UEFA Champions League, the Spanish Super Cup, and La Liga. Despite being a top contender for the prestigious trophy, it was revealed shortly before the ceremony that neither he nor any of his teammates would be attending the event in France.
