Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Monday extended her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) to 250 vulnerable persons in Enugu State with the distribution of essential food items aimed at alleviating hunger and hardship among disadvantaged groups.
The food outreach, officially titled “Food Outreach Scheme and Donation of Food Items to Vulnerable Groups in Enugu State”, was conducted on behalf of the First Lady by the wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, at an event that attracted various groups including persons with disabilities (PWDs), widows, and low-income earners.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the food distribution is part of the second batch of humanitarian relief being facilitated by Mrs. Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Initiative, which seeks to deliver targeted support to Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens.
Some of the food items distributed at the event included cartons of noodles, packs of spaghetti, semolina, baby food, and other staples aimed at cushioning the effects of the current economic hardship across the country.
Speaking during the event, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah commended the First Lady for her compassion and leadership in reaching out to the most vulnerable in society. She said, “Senator Oluremi Tinubu is doing this because of her exemplary leadership in alleviating the plights of the less privileged in the country.
It may be little, but it is something. We are distributing them to 250 selected vulnerable persons today, and I pledge to distribute my own palliatives to those who may not receive this batch.”
She added that the Enugu State government, under Governor Peter Mbah’s leadership, remains committed to supporting vulnerable communities, especially those in remote and rural areas.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Gideon Eze, who serves as the Public Relations Officer of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), expressed gratitude to the First Lady and the state government. He said, “We are delighted to have been part of this gesture today. The PWDs community in Enugu is grateful, but we also want to remind the state government of its promise to establish a disability commission. This will go a long way in ensuring long-term support and inclusion.”
Another beneficiary, Mrs. Ogadimma Chime, a widow, expressed heartfelt thanks, noting that the food items would greatly assist in feeding her family amid Nigeria’s rising cost of living. “May Almighty God bless Nkechinyere Mbah and Tinubu’s wife for remembering us,” she said, holding back tears of joy.
The Renewed Hope Initiative, launched by Senator Tinubu shortly after assuming office as First Lady, has continued to roll out social intervention programs across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. It focuses on nutrition, education, empowerment, health, and support for women and persons with disabilities.
The Enugu outreach follows similar food distributions and empowerment programs held in other states such as Lagos, Kaduna, and Ogun. Mrs. Tinubu has consistently emphasized the importance of reaching the underserved and reaffirmed her commitment to continue working with state governments and civil society organizations to deepen the important
