The House of Representatives has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the state assembly for six months.

During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas led a voice vote to approve the president’s proclamation, following a brief executive session. Lawmakers debated the decision, with Deputy House Spokesman Philip Agbese proposing a national mediation committee to facilitate peace between Governor Fubara and the state assembly. The House adopted his recommendation.

Additionally, the Minority Whip of the House suggested that the six-month suspension should not be absolute, arguing that if both parties reach a resolution, the emergency rule should be lifted before the term expires. The House also approved this proposal.

An attempt by Abia lawmaker Obi Agwuncha to halt the debate, citing constitutional requirements for a two-thirds quorum, was overruled by the Speaker.
