Each member of the House of Representatives will shortly receive N130 million utility Prado SUVs.

Rotimi Akin, the parliament’s spokesman, confirmed this in a statement issued late Sunday night in Abuja, stressing that the National Assembly had purchased and would distribute the vehicles soon.

According to the lawmaker, the move was consistent with existing procurement legislation, and it had been done in prior assemblies. He stated that the automobiles distributed are related to MPs’ oversight functions in carrying out their obligations within the standing committees and are not personal presents.

“These vehicles will remain the property of the National Assembly for the duration of the 10th assembly, from 2023 to 2027.”

“However, should the government’s extant assets deboarding policy still be in place at the end of the assembly’s tenure in 2027, lawmakers may have the option to purchase the vehicles before they become their property,” the member of the legislature added.

Akin stressed the importance of cars in improving the fulfillment of parliamentarians’ obligations, notably oversight activities across the country.

He stated his goal of ensuring the efficient implementation of government interventions, programs, and policies regardless of the location of Nigerian citizens, while also drawing attention to the legislature’s decreasing percentage of the national budget, which has consistently declined over the past decade and now stands at 0.5% of the federal budget.

The legislator asked stakeholders to focus cost reduction in suitable areas while assisting MPs in carrying out their jobs in an effective and ethical manner.

He noted that the vehicles are intended to facilitate improved representation, constituency outreach, and oversight tasks undertaken by elected representatives and not as status symbols.
