- Labour Party’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour decries Nigerians’ growing hardship under current policies.
- Questions widespread suffering amidst perceived benefits for bankers, officials, and allies.
- Fuel subsidy removal and naira float drive inflation to record levels.
The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the 2023 elections, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has criticized the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing them as advantageous to only a select few.
Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu has rolled out significant changes, including the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira. These policies, while touted as necessary for economic recovery, have sparked intense debate. The President has consistently defended these measures, pledging to sustain them despite public outcry.
During an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, Rhodes-Vivour expressed concern over the widening gap between the elite and ordinary Nigerians. “The people are facing unimaginable hardship,” he lamented. “Over 70% of their income now goes to transportation and food. Many can’t even begin to think about affording accommodation.”
He also condemned what he called a culture of excess within government circles, which he argued contrasts sharply with the economic struggles of ordinary citizens. “There’s a glaring disconnect between the sacrifices demanded of Nigerians and the lavish lifestyles of those in power,” he said.
Rhodes-Vivour questioned the tangible benefits of these reforms, asking, “How many Nigerians can genuinely say they are better off today? The only ones profiting appear to be bankers, government officials, and the President’s associates.”
Reports confirm that these policies have contributed to a sharp rise in inflation, further compounding the challenges faced by millions of Nigerians.
