Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, has hailed Ajax’s 19-year-old captain, Matthijs De Ligt, after the Dutch side sent Juventus crashing out of the Champions League on Tuesday.
De Ligt scored in the Ajax’s 2-1 win as they progressed to the last four of the competition.
Ferdinand described De Ligt as, “The best young defender on the planet’ following his outstanding display in the game.
The 19-year-old scored his side’s second goal as the Dutch giants stunned Juventus with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
“De Ligt, the best young centre-half on the planet,” the former England defender said on BT Sport.
“He has beautiful and majestic ball-playing ability and scored a huge goal as well there as well.
“The blend they’ve got with the young players and the older more experienced players – Tadic was almost given away by Southampton and is now producing miracles in the Champions League this year.
“It’s exciting times for Ajax.”
