Babatunji Wusu –
The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo, has officially confirmed four new commissioner nominees to join the Rivers State Executive Council. The nominees—Dr. Israel Lebura Ngbuelu, Evans Bapakaye Bipi, Barrister Otamiri Ngubo, and Barrister Benebo Anabraba—were ratified following a request from Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Screening and Confirmation Process
During the debate leading to the confirmation, House Leader Sokari Goodboy Sokari emphasized that three of the nominees are former members of the House, and thus did not require extensive questioning. He noted that the fourth nominee had recently undergone screening in his capacity as a caretaker committee chairman. Sokari urged the assembly to approve the nominees, a sentiment that was supported by Deputy Speaker Timothy Orubienimigha.
Following the discussion, Speaker Oko-Jumbo called for a voice vote, which resulted in a unanimous confirmation of all four nominees.
Speaker’s Remarks
In his address, Speaker Oko-Jumbo commended the nominees for their established track records, highlighting that three have served in the Rivers State House of Assembly for a minimum of eight years, while the fourth has relevant experience as a caretaker committee chairman. He stressed that their ratification is a call to service, urging the new commissioners to not only continue their dedication to the state but also to demonstrate unwavering loyalty to the State Government.
As part of a notable tradition, the three former lawmakers were invited to take a bow and exit the chambers, honoring their previous contributions to the Assembly and reflecting the respect accorded to experienced legislators.
