Babatunji Wusu –
In light of the state’s political happenings, political leaders from the seventeen wards of Rivers State’s Obio/Akpor Local Government Area have expressed their support for Edison Ehie and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, advising them to maintain focus.
Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), such as state chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Chijioke Ihunwo, and previous council chairman Solomon Abel-Eke, asked state lawmakers Martin Amaewhule and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to defuse tensions.
The group decided to launch community outreach initiatives in support of new elections for the two state assembly seats in the region. They asserted that the elections were illegitimate since Wike and Amaewhule defected from the PDP to the APC.
At a media event, Chijioke Ihunwo, the State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, released a statement from the organization denouncing verbal abuse and reported physical altercations with Governor Fubara in October. He asked the police to be impartial and professional throughout the political unrest.
Solomon Abel-Eke, the immediate past chairman of the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, stressed the necessity for the locals to back a governor from a different ethnic group in a manner similar to how they supported Nyesom Wike.
Declaring that the people of Obio/Akpor are not known for their greed, he went on to announce that community education efforts would be launched in an effort to gain support for Governor Fubara, a move that has the backing of women leaders, youths, and traditional rulers.
