Rivers flooding has disrupted communities across the state after heavy rainfall submerged homes, roads and vehicles, with Action Democratic Party governorship candidate Angel Lawson calling for stronger measures to reduce future risks.
Mr Lawson expressed sympathy for residents whose homes, businesses and belongings were damaged by the flood.
He said the recurring flooding in Port Harcourt, its suburbs and other vulnerable communities required both immediate assistance and long-term planning.
“Rivers flooding” has become a recurring challenge in several communities during periods of heavy rainfall. Mr Lawson said poor drainage, blocked waterways, waste disposal and urban planning issues could worsen the impact of flooding.
He also identified increasingly intense rainfall as a factor that authorities need to consider when planning flood-control measures.
Mr Lawson called for a shift from responding to flooding only after damage has occurred. He said authorities should identify risks and take preventive action before heavy rains arrive.
His proposed measures include comprehensive assessments and rehabilitation of drainage systems. He also called for regular desilting and maintenance of drainage channels.
In addition, Mr Lawson proposed protecting natural waterways, improving waste management and enforcing responsible urban planning standards.
He also called for modern flood mapping and early-warning systems to help identify communities at greater risk.
According to him, authorities should use data, engineering assessments and environmental information to determine where flood-control projects are most needed.
Mr Lawson also stressed the need for emergency support when flooding displaces residents.
He said affected families should receive timely assistance, including safe shelter where necessary, clean water and sanitation support.
The ADP candidate said building a more flood-resilient Rivers State would require sustained planning, investment, maintenance and accountability.
He urged residents affected by the latest flooding to remain hopeful and said his proposed approach would focus on reducing the risks associated with heavy rainfall.
Mr. Lawson is the governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party in Rivers State.
