The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed that the state-wide prohibition on the use of pyrotechnics before, during, and after Christmas and New Year’s celebrations remains in effect.
Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s Public Relations Officer, announced this in a statement on Thursday.
She stated that the explosive nature of the fireworks influenced the decision to ban them.
“The Commissioner of Police, officers and men of the Rivers State Command wish the good people of Rivers State a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in advance,” the statement said. The Command would want to take this opportunity to reassure everyone that suitable security measures have been put in place to ensure a trouble-free celebration.
“The CP wishes to remind members of the Public that the restriction on the use of fireworks (crackers & knockouts) before, during and after the Christmas and New Year celebrations is still enforced. This is based on the fact that these devices are ‘explosive’ and can cause injury.
“Consequently, the Command hereby urges to the entire public, parents and guardians alike, to warn their kids to desist from using crackers and knockouts during this season. Retailers of these devices are also advised and cautioned to halt their sales, as any individual or group of individuals found flouting this order will be detained and punished.
