The starting lineup for Portugal’s match against Switzerland in the round of 16 does not include Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo was dissatisfied with Santos’ choice to remove him from the field in the second half of the 1-2 loss to South Korea last week. Images that appear to show him responding to Santos’ decision with profanity have been circulated in Portuguese media.

After Ronaldo reacted aggressively, Santos indicated he wasn’t impressed with the forward’s actions.

“I absolutely didn’t like it. It didn’t appeal to me at all. Then, these issues are settled internally, the 68-year-old remarked. They are finished. The article involving this subject is now complete, and everyone is entirely focused on the match preparations ahead of tomorrow’s game.

The 37-year-old Ronaldo, who has converted three penalties, was also denied a starting spot by Santos.

“I choose the captain only after I arrive at the stadium. I still don’t know who will be in the lineup. I will continue to act in the same manner tomorrow as I have done today and will continue to do so in the future.
