Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Portugal, broke down during the national anthem prior to their encounter against Ghana on Thursday in Group H of the FIFA World Cup. At Stadium 974 in Doha, he appeared to become emotional when the cameras panned towards him.
Ronaldo is making his debut appearance in this game as a free agent after Manchester United released him following a contentious chat with Piers Morgan. Additionally, this is the first time Ronaldo has appeared as a free agent in the five World Cups in which he has played.
In 17 World Cup appearances, the football superstar has netted just seven goals, including a hat-trick against Spain in the 2018 edition of the prestigious competition.
Ronaldo, who replaced Iranian legend Ali Daei as the world leader in international goals scored, has scored 117 goals in 191 appearances since making his Portugal debut in 2003.
At the Qatar World Cup in 2022, Ronaldo will also need three more goals to surpass the legendary Eusebio, who has nine World Cup goals, as Portugal’s all-time leading World Cup goal scorer.
Although the 37-year-old has not confirmed it, this is probably Ronaldo’s final appearance in the quadrennial mega-event.
