Cristiano Ronaldo “definitively made no contact” with the ball for Portugal’s opening goal against Uruguay on Monday, according to Adidas, which has revealed that its technology has allowed them to demonstrate this.
In a statement, Adidas said: “We are able to conclusively demonstrate no contact on the ball from Cristiano Ronaldo for the game’s opening goal utilizing the Connected Ball Technology included in Adidas’s Al Rihla Official Encounter Ball in the match between Portugal and Uruguay.
In the 54th minute of Portugal’s match against Uruguay, Ronaldo claimed a goal, but Bruno Fernandes was later given credit for the score.
Ronaldo leaped the highest as the ball entered the goal after Bruno crossed the ball from the left side of the field. Later replays revealed that Ronaldo had narrowly missed making contact with the ball.

The goal would have tied Eusebio and the former Real Madrid forward as Portugal’s top World Cup goal scorer. Additionally, he would have eclipsed Lionel Messi in the competition for the most World Cup goals.
Despite Ronaldo’s name being on the official scorecard, Bruno Fernandes was given credit for the goal in the stadium announcement.
Later, the scorecard was confirmed, and Bruno was given official credit for the goal.
The lack of a “heartbeat” in our measurements and in the attached image indicates that no external force on the ball could be measured, according to Adidas’ statement.
“We can conduct our research with high accuracy thanks to the 500Hz IMU sensor inside the ball.”
The official match ball for the Qatar World Cup, the Al Rihla, contains a sensor suspended inside of it to help referees see light touches. This is the first ball in the history of the competition to use VAR technology, and it is intended to support choices made using the technology.
